Qualities You Should Look For In A Computer Technician

If your computer is broken or not running the way you think it should, you may be wondering what your next step is. The first step is hiring a reliable computer guy to help get you out of that jam or make your computer do as you wish. But what exactly should you look for in a computer repair technician?

The qualities you want in a computer tech are the following: reliability, knowledge, skill, and truthfulness.

1) Reliability

Qualities You Should Look For In A Computer Technician

You want a computer repair tech that will call you back. I have heard countless horror stories from clients that said the technician that came to fix their computer never called them back. There are many unreliable computer techs that take on more than they can chew and become evasive when you try to find out how your repair is going. Some repairs, such as virus and malware removal, can take a long time because the computer tech must scan your system repeatedly to remove the problem, but the computer technician should give you an honest answer and an honest time frame for when you can expect the computer to be clean. If they have ordered parts for your computer (which they often do because the stores are so overpriced), they should keep you up to date on the estimated shipping arrival date of your parts.

2) Knowledge

Your computer tech needs to keep his knowledge of new technologies up-to-date. This doesn't mean that your computer guy has to be bleeding edge, because often being so far ahead of the technology curve doesn't help a normal person out and parts are more expensive the newer they are (this is why you often see folks recommend waiting for version 2 of a product release - cheaper, faster, and more features). But your technician should be aware of new viruses or malware, as well as general trends that can benefit you, such as regular backups and any technology that makes your day to day life or job easier.

3) Skill

Your computer support technician should have the skills it takes to fix the problem. This may seem obvious, but many young, inexperienced technicians will take on repair jobs way beyond their skill set, leaving you without a working computer or laptop for weeks. Ask your technician what their background is. A good technician will have many years experience fixing computers. If you wanted someone that only had a small amount of experience, you would have probably asked someone in your family or circle of friends to take a look at the problem. An experienced technician with the proper skills can save you money in the long run by informing you of more inexpensive options or work arounds then spending hours of labor attempting to fix an un-fixable or un-solvable problem.

4) Truthfulness

A truthful computer technician is one that doesn't lead his or her client down a path of never-ending labor charges. You want a tech that is frank with you about the amount of time it is going to take to fix the problem. Why spend 0.00 in labor when you can replace the broken part with a new version for .00 and have it installed and working for .00 for a total cost of 0.00? Many greedy technicians are all too willing to fleece their clients to pad their invoices and labor charges. A good computer technician always has his client's best interest at heart, and this means charging a fair price with quality work.

Latest Computer Technology

Do you know what is inside your computer? Maybe you peeked when the service technician was installing something for you. When you first open up the CPU and look inside, a computer is a very threatening machine. But once you know about the different parts that make up a complete computer it gets a lot easier. Today's computers consist of around eight main components; some of the advanced computers might have a few more components. What are these eight main components and what are they used for? We will start with beginner level details to get you started.

First is the Power Supply. The power supply is used to provide electricity to all of the components in your computer. It is usually a rectangular box and is usually positioned in one of the corners of the computer. To find it for sure, look to see where the power cable plugs into the back of the computer and you have found the power supply. Most power supplies today are calculated in wattage and come in 50 watt increments (500 watt, 550, 600, etc

Second is the Motherboard. All of the components are connected into the motherboard; it doesn't mean that it is the brain of the computer. Yes it holds the brain and helps it act together with all the other components of the machine.

The third and a very important component of a computer is the CPU (Central Processing Unit), Known as the brain of the computer and nothing is going to happen without it. All major calculation performed by a computer are carried out inside its CPU. It is also responsible for activating and controlling the operations of other units of the system. The faster the CPU can do these calculations and give the correct answers, the faster the computer runs for the user. CPUs are now measured in gigahertz (Ghz) and they are at present up to our 3.8GHz or faster

A fourth component is the RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is used as momentary working storage for the computer. We have different types of RAM memory with different speed, but it should match with your motherboard so that it can work properly. The more RAM you have in your computer, the better your computer will work.

The fifth component is the Hard drive. This is where you can store everything. Our material on the hard drive includes the operating system (Windows XP, etc), games, and different types of software, etc. over the year the capacity of the hard drive is continuously improving and in the interval of few years its capacity have gone from around 20MB to over 500GB and more. So you can store a lot more information on your computer such as games, pictures, videos, applications, and more.

Sixth component is Cooling fans. Often most computers come with one cooling fan or it might have several. Its help to cool down the heat generated by others components, Such as power supply, the CPU, and some high-end video cards. The work of all of your cooling fans is to get this heat out of the case so that nothing overheats and breaks. While most of the noise you hear coming from a computer can be credited to the cooling fans, remember to be tolerant. The cooling fan is your friend!

Our Seventh and final component is the mixture of several different devices. These are the Cd-rom, DVD drives, floppy Drive and Backup devices such as external hard drive.
